In the class we talked about what Enigma was and how important in the media industry focusing particularly on the importance it has in the film industry. We did an exercise where we all had to close our eyes and the teacher went round with something inside a plastic bag and we all had a go at feeling the object through the plastic bag. People didn't know what it was so they were guessing based on what they felt, so people were guessing things like a lambs leg, and an animals heart. It turned out to be a cuddly toy in the end.
We then got asked to think about what we thought Enigma was and how important it was in the film industry, and this is some of the ideas the class came up with:
-Allowing the audience to guess what it is
-The sense of curiosity and what it leads to
-Point of view
-Dramatic irony
-Unknown
-Audience
-Suspense
-Unnerving
-Engages audience
-Build up - order of events/shots - editing
-Questions
-Problem
-Emotion
-Meguffin (something in movie that's just used to move the story along that's in the title e.g. Raiders of the lost ark - the lost ark isn't a mark point, its just used to move the story along, its more about the characters)
Our teacher then asked us how we thought it related to the starter and the class came up with the ideas of the sense of not knowing what the object is and and the anticipation to find out.
the real dictionary definition of Enigma is:
ENIGMA
noun
1. A person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand
2. A riddle or paradox
Moving on, we then looked at the opening 2 minutes to the movie 'Inglorious Basterds' and each table had a sheet in which they had to fill in the sounds and visual effects it has every ten seconds. After coming up with our ideas as tables we combined them as a class and wrote them on the whiteboard at the front which is shown below.
